Mosquito Species in Texas and Oklahoma

Texas and Oklahoma are home to more than 80 mosquito species, but a handful are responsible for the vast majority of backyard bites and disease transmission. Understanding which species are active in your area helps our team target treatments more effectively.

Aedes Mosquitoes (Asian Tiger Mosquito and Yellow Fever Mosquito)

Aedes mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters, which makes them especially disruptive for families who spend time outdoors during morning and afternoon hours. The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is recognizable by its black and white striped legs and body. The yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti) is similar in size but has distinct white markings on its thorax. Both species breed in small containers of standing water, including flower pot saucers, bird baths, clogged gutters, and discarded tires. They are the primary vectors for Zika, dengue, and chikungunya in the southern United States.

Culex Mosquitoes (Southern House Mosquito)

Culex mosquitoes are the most common nighttime biters across Texas and Oklahoma. The southern house mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus) is the primary vector for West Nile virus in both states. These mosquitoes breed in stagnant water with high organic content, including storm drains, neglected swimming pools, and retention ponds. Worker termites carry the bait back to the colony, where it eliminates the queen and the entire colony over time. The key advantage: bait systems address the root cause (the colony itself) rather than just creating a barrier. Stations are monitored regularly and provide ongoing, year-round protection.

Liquid Barrier Treatments

Liquid termiticides are applied to the soil around your foundation, creating a chemical barrier that kills or repels termites attempting to enter. These treatments are effective for active infestations and provide strong perimeter protection. However, they require trenching or drilling around the foundation, and barriers can degrade over time due to soil movement, landscaping, or construction. Liquid treatments address termites at the point of entry but don’t eliminate the underground colony.

Fumigation (Severe Cases Only)

Tenting and fumigation is reserved for severe drywood termite infestations where colonies have established throughout a structure. It requires vacating the home for 3–7 days and is significantly more expensive. Fumigation is rarely needed in Texas and Oklahoma, where subterranean termites (treatable with bait or liquid) are the dominant species.
